On 22nd February, 1915, the 2nd Grenadier Guards battalion of 4 (Guards) Brigade, 2nd Division, went into the trenches at Cuinchy, near La Bassé, where they remained until relieved on 24th February. On 23rd February enemy snipers were silenced by the use of rifle grenades but not before two men had been killed and another two wounded. One of those killed was John Harrison. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission has recorded his death as 23rd March, but on other records, including the Graves Registration Report Form, it is 23rd February. |
